Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDRO)

Follow infection control policies for preventing the transmission of MDROs
• Methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA)
• Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE)

• Extended Spectrum Beta-lactamase resistant Enterobacteriaceae (ESBLs)
• Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) such as Klebsiella pneumonia
carbapenemase (KPC) and Escherichia coli

Prevention Strategies

• Hand hygiene
• Contact precautions - as
needed
• Appropriate use of
antibiotics
• Visitors should be educated
on how organism is
transmitted and importance
of following hand hygiene
and indicated precautions
