How You Can Promote Patient Safety

1. Work within your scope of practice and job description.
 Know your responsibility and be accountable

2. Follow your chain of command.
 Report anything that appears unusual or unsafe

3. Get back to basics.
 Wash your hands frequently!
 Wear your name tag so it is completely
visible
 Introduce yourself to the patients and
families
 Check patient’s two identifiers before
starting
 Do NOT use abbreviations

4. Work to build an effective team.
 Schedule time in the Patient Safety
Simulation Lab

5. If you don’t know – Ask! Ask! Ask!

6. Speak Up for Patient Safety.
