National Patient Safety Goals (4)
CAUTI
Urinary tract infections are the most frequently reported healthcare associated infection and
approximately 80% are attributed to the use of indwelling urinary catheters, also known as
Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI). We should work towards reducing the
use of unnecessary indwelling urinary catheters and follow evidence-based practices which
have been shown to decrease the incidence of CAUTI.
Strategies for the Prevention of
Catheter Associated Urinary Tract
Infection – CAUTI
Insertion
• Obtain order prior to insertion of indwelling
urinary catheter (IUC)
• Approved criteria to be documented
• Perform hand hygiene prior to insertion
• Use aseptic technique and sterile equipment
• Secure catheter after insertion
• Obtain a urine reflex culture at time of insertion
• Disinfect sampling port prior to specimen
Care and Maintenance collection
• Perform hand hygiene before and after any contact with system
• Review daily the indication for ICU and document
• Assure catheter remains secure
• Keep bag below bladder level, not touching the floor and tubing unkinked
• Provide perineal, IUC care, or bath, daily
• Perform hand hygiene before and after any contact with system
• Disinfect sampling port prior to entering system for 15 seconds with alcohol and allow to dry
• Provide patient and family with educational material and document in EMR (Electronic Medical Record)
