Confidentiality
In your job you deal with confidential information every
day. Not only is patient information confidential,
business information is confidential, too.
Patient Information
Under HIPAA, we are required to take every precaution to protect
the confidentiality of patient data. This means that you should:
• Access patient information only to the extent it is required in
order to do your job.
• Use only legitimate and authorized means to collect patient
information. If at all possible, obtain the information directly
from the patient.
• Reveal patient information only if it is part of a legitimate
patient care or business purpose.
Remember, there are special laws covering the release of
information regarding a patient's HIV status or participation
in drug and alcohol treatment programs.
Employees treated in our facilities are patients. Their information
is protected and should only be accessed if it is part of your job
duties.
